My name is Candice and I have been sewing for over 20 years. I learned how to sew in home ec class in the 6th grade. I made a button up baseball jersey type shirt as well as an apron and a pillow with scrap fabric from a friend who was in an unfortunate accident that year.
I didn't sew much until I was pregnant with my first child. I made myself a few maternity tops and I even tried some maternity pants. They came out ok, but since it was a paper pattern I didn't care for the fit very much. Then I made my oldest daughter an appliqué dress and I was hooked on making things for her to wear.
I owned a small boutique while my kids were younger but once the 3rd child came around, I found it harder and harder to fulfill orders. I took a break for a few years after that and decided to work outside of the home but was laid off. I have been sewing ever since. I started out sewing for my children but they are really picky so I have been concentrating on sewing for myself lately. I find it very gratifying and it makes me so happy.
My love for the CKC Kaitlyn Top and Dress is no secret. I have made 3 dresses, 2 tops, 1 modified into a crop top, and (so far) 2 mash ups (a maxi length as well as this Kaitlyn/Hillary mash up). I don't see myself slowing down with making and modifying this pattern anytime soon.
The first thing I did was print out my size of the Kaitlyn and my size of the Hillary. For the Kaitlyn, I only printed the front and back top length (you don't need the full top length part of the pattern but you will need a few inches past the waist). For the Hillary, which has a hi lo skirt, I used 2 front skirts to make a circle skirt that is the same length in the front and back.
After you have your pattern pieces cut out, you will take your Hillary front bodice piece and place it on top of the Kaitlyn front bodice piece. Match these pieces up at the armcyse and trace the side seam for Hillary onto your Kaitlyn bodice piece (the center fold on both patterns won't completely match up but it didn't affect the fit for me). Start at the armcyse and continue down to the bottom of the Hillary bodice piece.

Now draw the bottom line from the Hillary onto the Kaitlyn bodice piece. This is your waist.

You can now remove your Hillary piece and put it away. Repeat for the back bodice of the Kaitlyn and cut out your new bodice pieces.
You may also want to make any adjustments that you need here. Since the Kaitlyn pattern and the Hillary patterns both fit me as expected, I didn't need to make any adjustments.
Once you have your pattern pieces made, you can go ahead and cut your fabric and follow the instructions in the pattern. Follow the Kaitlyn instructions for constructing the bodice and the Hillary instructions for constructing the skirt.
I hope you found this info helpful and I would love to see what you make.
Thanks to Sly Fox Fabrics for allowing me to guest blog for you today.
